About The Project
Not every story starts with a brief. Some start with a person.
In this case, a craftsman building custom surfboards and wakeboards in the Southeast, far from the usual center of surf culture.
Austin’s work was quiet, patient, and rare. Every board was shaped by hand. His materials were made in the U.S. His tools carried family history, passed down through generations and rooted in his upbringing in Hawaii.
That was a story worth telling.
The result was an award-winning short documentary about craft, patience, and the rare kind of person still willing to make something by hand in a world that usually wants things faster.
The Ask
The goal was to tell Austin’s story in a way that felt true to the work itself.
Not rushed. Not over-explained. Not loud for the sake of being loud. The film needed to breathe, giving space to the details, the process, and the quiet art behind Austin’s discipline.
The challenge was making something that felt thoughtful and well-crafted with a small budget, a small crew, and limited production time.
The project came together across two production days: one day for interviews and one long b-roll day covering five locations. That meant every choice had to count. We needed a clear plan, a tight structure, and enough flexibility to catch the honest moments that only happen when you leave a little room for them.
The Solution
We approached the film like Austin approaches his boards.
Shape carefully. Remove what does not belong. Let the craft show.
The interview gave us the heart of the story, but the film needed the same patience and attention Austin brings to each board. Our team built a clear structure and storyboarded the b-roll day in advance, giving the shoot a focused path without closing the door on spontaneous moments.
With a small crew and limited spaces, we worked with what the location gave us. The best walls. The strongest textures. Tight close-ups where the environment needed help. Hands on foam. Resin on the board. Tools with history. Small details that made the process feel personal and tactile.
In post, that same patience carried through. The edit had to make room for the work to breathe. Music, pacing, sound design, and color were all shaped to feel careful but not overworked, turning a simple craftsman profile into a short film with its own quiet rhythm.
The Deliverables
REMEDY delivered a 5 minute short documentary film, photography, and supporting festival materials for The Quiet Art.
The film went on to circulate through festivals for roughly a year, earning recognition for cinematography, directing, short film, and documentary work, including multiple Best Documentary and Best Short Documentary honors.
